Spillimacheen (named by the original indigenous peoples as “meeting of the waters”) is located at the confluence of the Columbia and Spillimacheen Rivers. The unincorporated village supports a significant arts community and is serviced by a post office and several small businesses. The local economy is based primarily on farming and ranching. Cooks, artisans, and crafters from the Columbia River valley and as far away as Calgary compete for prizes and show off their various crafts.
Brisco is located about 13 km south of Spilimacheen and is serviced by a General Store and other small businesses. The area also has a community hall, and thriving riding club with members of all ages. There are also major amenities available less than 15 mins away in Radium Hot Springs.
The area provides many access points to backcountry locations in the Purcells. Kayaking and canoeing are very popular on the local rivers and lakes. The area is a well-known rock climbing destination, with dolomite rock faces and world-class climbing in the Jubilee Mountain area. Mountain bikers flock to Westside Road and Giant Mascot Mine Road. Hikers have an endless number of areas to explore, including the Lower Bugaboo Falls and Salmon Falls trails.
